My  husband very kindly surprised me with an ipad for my birthday recently, and me being me I wondered what sort of cover case to make for it. I’ve come up with this design which I think would be suitable for a man or a woman and protects my IPad very well.

The crochet stitch I predominently used was the popcorn stitch as I think its bulk adds protection for the Ipad case. I made the cover from quite coarse yarn using it double which probably equates to double-knitting wool. However since making the cover I thought it would look really trendy made in garden twine or string. Don’t be too critical of my stitching, remember this is my prototype!

The pattern can also be adapted to fit any other tablet or  to make a Kindle cover.

If you don’t want to make one you can buy an ipad cover from my shop.

Size 10” x 9”

Materials

2  x 50grm balls of double knitting wool.

One 4.00 crochet hook

One 18” zip

½ yd of lining fabric

Method

Using no. 4.00 crochet hook make 66ch

1st row 1 tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into each chain to end.

2nd row 3ch, miss 1st tr, 1 tr into each tr to end, 1 tr into 3rd of 3 ch.

3rd row as 2nd

4th row 3ch to count as 1st tr, miss 1st tr, 1tr into next tr, *1ch, 5tr into next tr, slip working st off hook and pick up the ch st worked before the 5tr, pick up workin loop and draw through the ch st – 1 popcorn st has now been worked -. 1 ch, 1 tr into each of next 2 tr, rep from * ending with 1tr into the turning ch.

5th row as 2nd row

6th row as 4th row

7th row as 2nd row

8th row 1ch, tr into each st to end

9th row 3ch, miss 1st tr, *yrh, insert hook into next tr and pull loop up to 2.5cm (1in), (yrh, insert hook into same tr and pull loop up to same height) 3times, yrh and pull through all 9 loops on hook, 2ch, miss next tr, rep from * to end.

10th row 3ch, 1tr into 1st 2ch sp, *2tr into next 2ch sp, rep from * to end with 2tr into 3rd of 3ch.

Rep last 2 rows 3 times

Rep 4th and 5th rows twice

Work 3 more rows of trebles and fasten off

To make up

Pin work out and lightly press.

Cut fabric ¼” larger then crochet cover. Press under ¼” turning all round fabric lining.

To make pocket.  From remaining fabric cut piece 7” x 8”. Fold in half , right sides facing , and machine round 3 sides. Turn inside out and press.  Machine, near edge all round pocket, folding in raw edge.

Position pocket on lining, pin and machine in place. Machine lines down through pocket to make a place for a mobile phone and a couple of pens.

Pin lining to crochet cover and sew in place.

Pin zip in place along top and down one side and machine in place.

With wrong sides facing, join final seam with double crochet and fasten off.

I made a matching tassle to attach to the zip but a mobile charm would work just as well.

After seeing the ipad cover on my website, my Daughter-in-Law asked me to make one  for her and my two granddaughters. I made the girls in 2 colours of double knitting wool, one yellow and green the other orange and yellow. They will have to fight over which cover they want.

I tried my string suggestion for my Daighter-in-Law’s cover and I think it turned out very well (even though I say so myself)
